More troubles at ABC’s Cavemen

Sunday, July 29th, 2007 on SpoilerBuzz.com

Apparently there are still problems at Cavemen, and people are starting to wonder if the show will actually be ready in time for its October 2nd premiere. As you remember, the pilot episode was being re-shot for multiple reasons. But critics are saying that it’s just plain bad.

During ABC’s presentation at the Television Critics Association’s summer press tour Wednesday, the network said the pilot was being reshot, as the show’s creators felt it flashed too far forward in the characters’ lives, while failing to properly establish their backstories.

Meanwhile, reporters drilled the producers about perceived parallels between the protagonist cavemen and black stereotypes.

Executive producer Josh Gordon said there was no intention of trying to have the cavemen represent any minority group in particular, though he acknowledged that some of the humor in the show’s pilot episode could be misconstrued.

“We’re aware that the pilot seems to lean a little bit more in that direction. But in the episodes that we’re coming up with now, we never saw them as, again, a stand-in for one group,” Gordon said.

His fellow executive producer Mike Schiff added that the theme of ethnic prejudice provided a “background to the show…but it’s not a driving force.”

We’ll keep you posted… but things aren’t looking good for those Geico cavemen at the moment!

Julie White joins Cavemen as series regular

Wednesday, July 18th, 2007 on SpoilerBuzz.com

Julie White is now a series regular on ABC’s upcoming Cavemen, which follows the lives of three modern day cavemen. Julie guest starred in the initial pilot episode of the series as Caveman Joel’s mother-in-law-to-be.

Cavemen follows the lives of three Cavemen, who are best known by their appearance in the Geico commercials.

I wonder if Geico gets any on-screen publicity because the Cavemen were inspired by their series of commercials. Or maybe one of the cavemen works for Geico in the show!

Sean Huntington joins Cavemen, replacing Dash Mihok

Tuesday, July 10th, 2007 on SpoilerBuzz.com

Looks like the new ABC series Cavemen, inspired by the Geico commercials featuring cavement dumped into modern society, is undergoing some creative changes before airing. Sam Huntington has been brought on board to play a new Caveman Andy. Andy is Joel’s (Bill English) little brother, and replaces Jamie - another little brother - played in the pilot by Dash Mihok.

The series also stars Nick Kroll as Nick, the best friend to Joel.

Also in the creative changes, a new first episode will be filmed and will air before the pilot, with this new episode looking at the Cavemen’s backstory. Then the pilot episode - with the new little brother scenes re-filmed - will air later in the season.

Am I the only one who wishes they kept the original Geico Cavemen?

Remember those Geico cavemen in the commercials? Well they are alive and well in the new show Cavemen. Here is a blurb about the new show, which just secured a spot on the ABC fall schedule for 2007/2008.

Over the last hundred thousand years, mankind has evolved from primitive creatures into the sophisticated beings we are today, with the exception of a small minority who unfortunately didn’t physically evolve.

Meet Joel, his younger brother Jamie, and his best friend Nick, three cavemen living in modern-day Atlanta. These cavemen continually find themselves at odds with contemporary society as they struggle to overcome their physical appearance and the accompanying stereotypes.

Joel is content with his life while pursuing the American dream, and has recently become engaged to Kate, a lovely Southern Caucasian girl. However, he must constantly vie for the respect of her conservative parents. Joel’s relationship with Kate and his personal contentment are constantly being put to the test by Nick and Jamie’s emotional demands..
